ID Theft and Mortgage Fraud in Massapequa

Matthew Sutphen and his wife Angela were arrested in the Second District Court in Lindenhurst while they were waiting for their scheduled appearance in a real estate dispute that is unrelated to what they were arrested for.

The couple from Massapequa; were arrested on charges of Identity Theft and Mortgage fraud according to Identity Theft Unit Detectives. Matthew and Angela Sutphen are the owners of Cornerstone Bancor Mortgage Corporation located on Merrick Road. The couple are accused of using the identity of a former employee and the identity of a potential customer to acquire lines of credit via mortgage loans.

The couple’s home was searched as well as their business prior to their arrest on Tuesday morning.

Matthew Sutphen is 47 years of age and his wife Angela is 50 years old. Each has been charged with two counts of identity theft. Angela was charged with an additional count of forgery.

The couple will be arraigned on Wednesday at the First District Court.

The case is being investigated by the Suffolk Policy Department and the United States Postal Inspectors.
