Man in St. Louis sentenced for five years

Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, Michael Reap in a press release today publicized the sentencing of Shawn Cannon. Mr. Cannon received sixty months for bank fraud, identity theft and bankruptcy fraud. His sentence is to be served in federal prison. United States District Judge E. Richard Webber was the sentencing judge.

Mr. Cannon according to information obtain in court document falsified his identity by using a false social security number and income information to obtain a mortgage from Pulaski Bank. Mr. Cannon submitted the fraudulent application between August and October of 2005. He received a mortgage loan for approximately three hundred thousand dollars for the home in Florissant, Missouri. He failed to make the monthly payments on the property and filed for bankruptcy in December of 2008. Mr. Cannon used the false social security number for the bankruptcy as well.

Mr. Cannon last June plead guilty to one felony count of bankruptcy fraud, one count of bank fraud and one felony count of identity theft.

Nancy Gargula the United States Trustee for Region 13 which is a part of the Eastern District was pleased with the sentencing and believed that it showed that abuse of the bankruptcy system will not be tolerated.

Michael Reap thanked all the Members of the Eastern Missouri Bankruptcy Fraud Working Group; The Office of the United State Trustee for Missouri, Arkansas and Nebraska; The Federal Bureau of Investigation; The Internal Revenue Service; The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Social Security Administration.

The United States Trustee program is a component of the Justice Department that protects the veracity of the bankruptcy system. It oversees case administration and litigation to ensure bankruptcy laws are enforced. The St. Louis Trustee Office referred this case to the United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
